A New Era for Digital Credentials: Open Badges 3.0 is here
We are delighted to announce that Anthology® Milestone now supports 1EdTech Open Badges 3.0 standards*. As of July 30th, badges created in Milestone may leverage Open Badges 3.0, adhering to the industry’s highest standards for digital credentials.
In short, Open Badges 3.0 builds on previous releases to make digital badges more detailed and secure. Badges can now be encrypted with new data, providing extra context on what achieving the credential involves, how it aligns with skill frameworks, and how those skills were assessed. These enhancements ensure badges do more than just celebrate achievements—they provide real insights into a learner’s skills, allowing institutions, students, and employers to embrace new credentials with confidence.
More specifically, Open Badges 3.0 allows:
- Badges that are more tamper-proof and trustworthy
- Support for a wider range of achievement types and data content
- Increased scope to align badges with specific skills and competencies
- Easier verification, allowing for broader recognition of badges and increased interoperability
Institutions will not need to take any administrative or configuration steps in Milestone to enable Open Badges 3.0. As of July 30th, you will have access to a new badge creation workflow. Your students will continue to use Achievement Studio, where they’ll be able to claim earned badges. The ability to share and organize badges that showcase detailed skills information is coming soon for Open Badges 3.0. During a period of transition from Open Badges 2.0 to 3.0, you will have access to create badges using the current Open Badges 2.0 process, and existing badges, created with the Open Badges 2.0 standard, will continue to be supported.
The adoption of Open Badges 3.0 is the latest of many initiatives that Anthology has undertaken in collaboration with 1EdTech, all designed to remove friction for learners and enable engaging, multi-faceted learning experiences. We have been heavily involved in development of the Open Badges 3.0 framework and are also leading the way with integrations between valuable teaching and learning tools.
