New in 2025: Adding Open Badge capabilities to the Blackboard Catalog
Published
We’re delighted to announce a new integration between Blackboard Catalog (formerly the Training and Development Manager) and Anthology® Milestone that will further enhance learner engagement for short courses and training modules. This will be available from January 13th and will mean that Open Badges capabilities—already natively integrated into courses in Blackboard®—are also available in the Catalog.
Blackboard Catalog supports training initiatives, short courses, and other non-traditional modalities. It complements the full learning experience offered by the Blackboard LMS with functionality specific to non-degree programs, such as a payment portal and a catalog display so learners can browse relevant options.
This integration will add an extra layer of recognition for student achievements in these courses, in turn improving persistence and learner engagement. Learners will be able to see the credentials associated with each course as they browse options—be that a badge or a certificate—and complete the credential knowing there will be a tangible record of their achievement. Compliance with Open Badge standards means that the learner can leverage what they’ve attained in the course in further studies or the workforce.
For institutions, this allows a seamless extension of their existing badging program. All created badges can easily be synced with relevant courses in the Catalog and managed centrally so any updates can be applied across the board. This represents a great opportunity for institutions to align degree and non-degree programs, meet student needs, and provide consistent recognition for achievement across different modalities.
As announced during our recent roadmap webinar, we have ambitious plans to continue to evolve our offering in this area in 2025. Blackboard Catalog will see a number of enhancements, including improvements to accessibility and navigation, enhancements to workflows for certificate creation, and strengthened integrations with leading payment gateways. For Anthology Milestone, we’ll be leading the charge to Open Badges 3.0 compliance and applying Anthology’s vast AI expertise to add efficiency to the badge creation process. Stay tuned to our upcoming roadmap presentations for the latest updates.
