Expanding Ally Support for HTML Content in D2L Brightspace

Published
As instructors at institutions worldwide create richer content experiences for students within the learning management system/virtual learning environment (LMS/VLE), it is more important than ever to ensure this content is created with accessibility and inclusivity in mind. However, it can still be challenging for those instructors to know where the problems are and how to fix said problems to provide a better experience for students.

To help instructors with this challenge, Anthology® Ally was designed to identify these problems and provide actionable feedback and suggestions to improve the rich content, also commonly referred to as WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) content. A few years ago, we launched the first phase of this feedback to help clients using Ally within D2L Brightspace, which focused on that WYSIWYG content, and have been gathering feedback directly from D2L Brightspace instructors to identify areas of additional enhancement. One of the biggest additional areas of need for instructors has been focused on HTML content created in or uploaded to Brightspace, which lacked Ally’s preview and guidance features.

This feature is now available for D2L Brightspace clients
To address this need, Ally is releasing an enhancement to our Brightspace integration that allows this HTML content to be treated as WYSIWYG content and brings instructors the ability to leverage Ally's capabilities like quick fixes, guidance, and content previews (which were not previously available for this type of content). Instead of frequently encountering “Guidance Not Available Yet” in the feedback, instructors will now be able to address issues more quickly and easily within the Ally Instructor Feedback flow.

Today Anthology Ally analyzes millions of HTML files across our many Brightspace client integrations, and we are excited about how this enhancement will help instructors as they look to improve their digital course content. Anthology Ally remains committed to our approach of developing solutions that are directly aligned with client feedback and we look forward to seeing how instructors leverage this updated feature in Brightspace to improve the learning experience for all students.

For those that use Ally in other LMS/VLE integrations, you also already have access to these powerful features for your WYSIWYG content! Check out our help page for more information on how instructors can leverage this to help with their efforts.

Note that this feature is specific to the Ally Brightspace integration only and was rolled out in waves per region for both new files and existing content (where existing content was re-scored and re-processed with the new feedback capabilities). This process is now complete.

Discover more about this feature in the Ally Release Notes and stay tuned for further updates!
